I didn’t have high expectations before seeing Skyline. The reviews on Rotten Tomatoes were generally negative and the trailers didn’t give me the impression that it was going to be that good.
Regardless, I’m a major sci-fi movie fan, so despite the negativity I went ahead and watched it this past weekend.
Perhaps it’s because I watched this movie at 2 in the morning or because my expectations were already set so low, but I absolutely loved this movie.
Unfortunately, I am one of the few who did.
Seriously, there is a lot of hate going on for this movie.
Here are some of the stats:
Rotten Tomatoes: 0% (top critics) / 14% (all critics)
***
It’s not all bad though. The Audience Rating on Rotten Tomatoes is at 75% (liked it) and I have found forum posts and blogs from other people who also really liked it.
I thought the special effects were amazing; especially considering this movie was made for only $10M. The acting was fine, not great, but not distracting.
I honestly didn’t expect anything that good, but I found myself on the edge of my seat the entire movie. I was thoroughly entertained.
Once it was over I jumped online to find out what other people thought and I couldn’t believe the amount of negativity that I found. Post after post of people stating how bad they thought it was. There was the occasional post from someone stating that they really liked it, but they were in the minority.
Despite the hate, the movie is a box office success, bringing in $50 million (worldwide) in 4 weeks on a budget of $10 million. The producers have already stated that a sequel is planned for 2012.
Personally, I’m looking forward to the sequel. The ending of Skyline hints at what could be a very entertaining follow up.
