Best Buy Closed, what about Reward Zone GC?

On February 4, 2013, in Random, by ComputerAbuser

This past weekend, our local Best Buy location closed as part of a Canada wide restructuring that will see smaller locations opening up to replace the traditionally large big box locations of the recent past.

You can read more about that here.

Anyway, this kinda sucks since I just received a $5 Best Buy Rewards Zone gift certificate.  Since Reward Zone GCs are only good in-store (and not online) I figured I was out of luck.

Well, I just got off the phone with Best Buy Reward Zone customer service and they informed me that RZ GCs can be redeemed at Future Shop.  Since our local Future Shop is still open, I just need to print it off, take it in and I should be good to go.  Sweet!

On February 4, 2013, in Movies, by ComputerAbuser

Just like in previous years, General Mills has teamed up with Cineplex to offer free movie passes with select General Mills cereals.

Each specially marked box contains a code for either a general or child admission that you redeem online at http://www.cineplex.com.  There are no limits to how many you can use, although they are only valid Sunday through Thursday.

During February the codes are good for 1 free admission.  From March 1st to May 31st, they are good for 1 Buy One Get One Free admission.

Details on how to redeem the code can be found here.

Details on the rules and which cereals are included can be found here.

We already used 5 codes to see Warms Bodies this past Sunday.  😀

Titanium Backup, I Think I Love You!!

On December 7, 2012, in Technology, by ComputerAbuser

I really like my Sony Xperia Play, but if I get another “Out of Memory” error while doing an update, I’ll smash the damn thing on the ground!!!!

Luckily, that shouldn’t happen any more and that’s all thanks to Titanium Backup PRO.

For some background info, I guess this is common with a lot of Android phones.  Many manufacturers simply do not provide/configure enough free internal memory to install as many apps and games as the average user would like to install.

Common tricks to free up internal memory include using the app App 2 SD to move applications from internal memory to the SD card.  This is a no brainer if the app allows it.  Unfortunately, many apps will not allow themselves to be moved.

Pirating Software, Old School

On October 18, 2012, in Random, Technology, by ComputerAbuser

Back before BitTorrent or LimeWire or Kazaa or Napster or FTP or before the Internet for that matter, existed the Bulletin Board System (BBS).  If you wanted porn or pirated software this is where you would go.  The best BBS’s were private and you had to “know a guy” who “knows a guy” in order to get access.

But if you could get access, OH BOY, the goodies you would find.  No crappy shareware like you would find on the public BBS’s, no, only genuine full copies of the newest games.

Unfortunately, with a 2400 bps modem and a single phone line shared between the whole family, there is only so much you could download.  Luckily, after about 9 PM, I was allowed to take over the phone line and then the downloading would commence.

Ahhhh, good times.  I remember a game like Doom, sitting at around 5 MB would take over 5 hours to download.  Can you imagine that?

Anyway, times were good while they lasted, but by around 1995 most everyone was moving to the Internet.  I believe BBS’s peaked around 1996 and died off quickly after that.  I’m just glad I was around to see it.

Thank You Steam

On October 18, 2012, in Games, Random, by ComputerAbuser

Hello Steam or Valve or whoever, I just wanted to say thank you.  I used to be a software pirate.  No, I didn’t actually crack and upload games, no I was too lazy for that.  I just downloaded already cracked games instead of buying them.  I did that for years I’m afraid.  Even games that you created like Half-Life and Portal I’m sad to say.  If it makes you feel any better, I own both of those games now.  Actually, I own the entire Half-Life collection, plus Left 4 Dead 1 & 2 and Portal 1 & 2.

It’s all thanks to Steam!

Honestly, though, I don’t just buy from you guys.  I sometimes buy from Gamefly and Amazon, but those games are often on Steam anyway, so we’re all good.  I really just buy from whoever is cheapest.  Come on, I may no longer download pirated software, but I’m still a cheapskate.  Hey, I’m just being honest.  If I couldn’t get my games from you guys at 75% off, I would probably still be downloading pirated games.  I think we can both agree that at least this way, somebody gets paid.  Amiright?

Anyway, thanks again.  You keep selling stuff crazy cheap and I’ll keep buying it.

Stargate Atlantis – Still Missing from Netflix

On October 18, 2012, in Random, by ComputerAbuser

Well I guess I was wrong in assuming that Netflix would do their best in order to get Stargate back up on their system.  It’s been over 2 months and still nothing.

It’s been so long that I can’t even remember what episode I’m on.

If it doesn’t show up soon, I will probably have to just go and download the entire series and then nobody gets paid.  That’s not cool.

Stargate Atlantis No Longer on Netflix USA

On August 2, 2012, in Movies, by ComputerAbuser

I posted a short while ago that i was disappointed that Stargate Atlantis was not on Netflix Canada and had to resort to using a hack to access Netflix USA in order to watch it.

Well, I guess I missed the notice, because Netflix’s license to carry Atlantis expired yesterday.  Meaning, it’s no longer there.

This doesn’t mean it will never come back, but Netflix will have to negotiate a new contract with the content owners.

I hope they do this soon.  I was only half way through season 2 and it was getting pretty good.  I would hate to have to waste a bunch of time downloading it illegally.  At least with Netflix, somebody is getting paid.

I Really Miss Microsoft Voice Command

On July 3, 2012, in Technology, by ComputerAbuser

There are a few things that I miss about Windows Mobile, but by far I miss Microsoft Voice Command the most.

Sure, my Xperia Play has some type of Voice Command software but it’s garbage.

I have a Bluetooth speaker in my car and there is no reason I need to actually touch my phone to make a call, but when I can only get the damn Voice Command software to correctly dial about 10% of the time, I’m basically forced to manually dial the call.

As a result, I rarely ever use it any more.  It kinda sucks that it’s come to this.

Hey Netflix Canada, Where’s Stargate Atlantis?

On June 21, 2012, in Movies, by ComputerAbuser

Many moons ago I mentioned that I was interested in watching some recent TV show additions to Netflix Canada.  In particular Farscape and Stargate SG-1.  Both shows that I missed the first time that they aired.

Well, shortly after that post I started watching Farscape.  It was great, loved it.

Then I started watching Stargate SG-1.  Another great show, loved it.

In the case of Farscape, it was cancelled in the final season without notice, so it ends on a cliffhanger.  Luckily, a 2 part mini-series was released to wrap everything up.  Unfortunately, it’s not available for streaming on Netflix, so I had to download it illegally.  🙁

Project Fedora Kickstarter Success!!!

On June 21, 2012, in Games, by ComputerAbuser

In case you missed it last week, the Project Fedora Kickstarter was a complete success.

The target was actually hit June 7th, but things really exploded on June 6th.  That was the day of “Update #19: The Magnificent 7!”

See, after 22 days of modest growth the Kickstarter was pretty much on target to hit the $450K goal shortly before the end date.  Most days were averaging around $9K.  It was then that the folks at Big Finish Games posted their 19th project update.

In this update, we were notified that as a result of hitting 4500 backers, the Magnificent 7 (7 unknown high donors) would be donating $4K for every $6K raised starting at $386K, as a means to leapfrog the way to the $450K project goal.

I don’t know what they were expecting, but things exploded!!!  Within minutes $20K had been raised and within hours we were within $20K of the goal which was achieved the next morning.  it was all very exciting as you could imagine.  Overall almost $100K was raised in that 24 hour period.

In the end over $600K was raised (including Paypal donations) which is pretty good compared to projects like SpaceVenture & Pinkerton Road.  I would have preferred a lot more, but considering $600K was raised by only 7000 backers (SpaceVenture & Pinkerton had over 10K backers each) I guess we can’t complain.
